Fix an Air Conditioner: A Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Check the Error Code

First, check if your air conditioner displays an error code. Many AC systems can diagnose issues and show you the problem. Knowing the error code simplifies troubleshooting and repairs, saving you from trial and error.

Different AC units have unique codes, which could be letters, numbers, a mix, or flashing lights. Central ACs display error codes on the control board’s LED screen, not on the unit itself. Wall-mounted ACs might show the code on the remote control.

Step 2: Cross-reference with Your Owner’s Manual

Find your owner’s manual and installation guide that came with your air conditioner. Look for sections about troubleshooting and repair, and check if there’s a list of error codes. You can compare these codes with the one your AC system is showing to understand what the problem might be before proceeding.

Step 3: Turn Off Your Unit and Unplug it from the Socket

Test the fuses using a multimeter set to the lowest Ohms scale. Connect the red lead to one end of the fuse and the black lead to the other end. You should see a numerical value on the multimeter if the fuse is working. If it shows no number, 0, or an infinity symbol (∞), you have a blown fuse that needs replacing.

Next, check the access panel located near your home’s electrical conduit. Use an insulated screwdriver to carefully remove each screw from the panel box. Keep track of the screws to put them back in the right spots later.
